'Lady Mary Towneley long dreamed of the idea for a long distance route over the Pennines for horse riders and campaigned for the Pennine Bridleway National Trail for many years. Sadly she died on 13 February 2001 after a long and bravely fought illness. The Mary Towneley Loop is dedicated to her memory.'
