'Visitors to Bolton Abbey have been welcomed here since the foundation of Bolton Priory in 1154. In 1810 the Rev. William Carr and the 6th Duke of Devonshire opened Strid Wood to the public. Together they designed 12 miles of glorious walks with carefully positioned resting spots to take in the spectacular views.
