'Old coffin routes which were used in time past by burial parties going to Clachan Church at Applecross Bay. There are various cairns along the route which indicate where the procession would have rested and possibly drank to the deceased. They are both very long coffin roads and it is entirely understandable that people would need frequent rests along the way.'

'The development of roads was significantly advanced in Medieval Scotland by the increased hegemony of the church. This road was probably in existence before 1200 but around this time it was appropiated and developed by the monks in Balmerino Abbey to facilitate the transport of stone from Nydie quarry for the improvement of the Abbey.'

Haywood - Slipperfield 'This is an old drove road that was marked on Bartholomew maps well into the 20th century. Although there are no buildings at Boston Cottage today, it is believed to have been the location of a staging post where the horses pulling the Edinburgh to Lanark mail coach were changed.'

'This old route is marked as "Mounth Capell" on the Gough Map, which has been dated to between 1355 and 1366. This would have been a very convenient pass between Glen Muick and the Braes of Angus and may have been a good deal used in the days when the district was more populated.'

'This is said to be an excellent feat of engineering by the Romans as there are lengthy cuttings and terraces where the bedrock has been exposed and used as the road surface ... Craik Cross Hill is fascinating because it was a Roman Watch Tower but then was reused with a cross marker stone on the hill. This may have been a route pilgrims used to get to Whithorn and so the cross would have been a sign to guide people there ...'

'At Fassfern, there is ample parking by the stone bridge on the old road. From here, the route is signposted on the east bank of the burn and is waymarked through the forest on to the open ground of Gleann Suileag ... Despite the proximity to the public road, this area gives a great feeling of isolation.'

'Used in the 18th and 19th centuries when the herring industry was strong.  It was used by people bringing home a stock of salted herring for winter use and also by fishwives carrying huge creels of herring from Dunbar to the markets in Lauder ... Gradually the speed and ease of the railway lines left little need for people to carry huge weights of fish over this high pass and it fell out of use.  It is probably a long time since a herring has passed by this way. Another historic route similarly used for the trade in fish is the Buckie Fishwives Path, Moray.'

'Sadly we have no survey of the whole of this route. However, it has been reported to us that access is dissuaded by a painted notice on the gateposts at the Kinloch Lodge road end. Although this is the line of the Moine Path right of way, a suggested alternative is to use the estate track that lies 400m further north along the public road. This passes the derelict Kinloch House and joins the Moine Path at NC551525. Any recent survey of this right of way would be very welcome indeed ...'

Drove road from the Bridge of Muick outside Ballater to to the end of the public road at Invermark, 5km from Tarfside: 'Queen Victoria and Prince Albert crossed by Mount Keen in 1861. A well commemorates the spot where they rested after riding from Deeside, and it bears the following couplet: "Rest, Traveller, on this lonely green, and drink, and pray for Scotland's Queen"''

'This route was originally a Waggonway coming from Cowdenbeath and Crossgates to St David's Harbour in Inverkeithing Bay.  It was used to export coal and minerals from the mines around Cowdenbeath and Crossgates for shipping from Inverkeithing.  The Fordell Railway was still in use in 1939.'

'This is the original route through Glen Affric which fell into disuse when the present public road on the north side of the River Affric through Chisholm's Pass was made in the 19th century. It is shown on Roy's map of 1755 as Road from Kintail to Inverness ...

'The original route on the south side of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin is now very difficult to pass due to forestry. Some intrepid surveyors have managed to hack their way through and poles were placed along the route some years ago, but these are unlikely to be easy to find.  However it is a great shame that the whole of this path is ignored for the difficulty in passing a relatively short stretch.  The views are apparently far better than those of the shoreside path.'

'This old road is depicted very clearly in John Adair's map of 1683.  Maps tended to show only the very important roads in the 17th and 18th century, so it must have been of great significance.  Indeed according to Adair, it was the only route running north out of Perth on the east side of the Tay and as such would have seen a great deal of traffic.'

'Strathkelvin Railway Path is rail trail following the route of several dismantled railway lines extending from Gartcosh to Strathblane. The Northern Section follows the route of the Campsie Branch of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway which was extended as the Blane Valley Railway line and closed in 1951 (although some parts of the line were still used for freight into the '60s).[1] The Southern Section follows a branch of the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway. Starting in Kirkintilloch it runs south and currently terminates at the northern tip of Gartcosh; just before the original railway junction would have split east to Bedlay Colliery and south to Glenboig.

'The Irvine Valley towns of Darvel and Newmilns were, until recently, world famous in the manufacture of lace products ... Before the factory system was introduced with the advent of the power loom in 1872, lace was produced on handlooms in hundreds of cottages in the Valley. The handloom weavers in the days of this domestic system of manufacture then walked over the moor with their rolls of cloth to sell them in the markets of Paisley and Glasgow - hence the name The Weavers' Trail.'
