* BritishWalks.org Featured
'Since the beginning of 1999 I have made over 1,000 walks throughout the UK, totaling over 18,000 miles. This website details all of these walks.'
* Christopher Somerville Walks Featured
‘Christopher Somerville is Walking Correspondent of The Times. His long-running ‘A Good Walk’ series appears every Saturday in the Times Weekend.’
* Fancy Free Walks Featured
'This website is a guide for people who love to walk, to observe and enjoy our incredible countryside (and townscapes too) at a leisurely speed, and who like to read a little of the story behind the places they visit. Distances vary from a soothing 1.5km (1 mile) to a bone-shattering 32 km (20 miles) ... Fancy Free Walks is a totally non-profit-making organisation dedicated to the public good. It has no finance and all the work in planning and authoring the walks, and in maintaining this site is voluntary and unpaid ...'
* Griffmonsters Great Walks Featured
'This site documents some Great British walks providing route details, maps, pubs, features and folklore. Although predominately focused on Norfolk and Suffolk, there are walks from a wide selection of other regions.'
* Visorando Featured
Website derived from its French equivalent: 'The website was built on a participative model : everyone (private individual, tourism professional) can share their own hiking tours. Each track, before being published, is checked by a team of moderators. Then, walkers are invited to give their opinion on the routes followed. By collecting information from the field, we are able to keep the tracks up to date. It is this specific model that allowed us to build an offer reaching this level of quality, which is unequable on the free web nowadays'.
* Walking Englishman, The Featured
'With around 25,000 visits each day, this is the most popular free content web site for walking in Great Britain on the Internet. There are reports of all the walks covered with full statistics and all with complimentary pictures'
* Walking in ... England Featured
'Thousands of FREE walks to download. So, near home or on holiday there will be a great walk for you! Every County gives you: Free walk descriptions to download; Ordnance Survey maps for the County; All the walking clubs in the county.'
'Welcome to my walking diary, which I started in January 2013 in order to store memories and revisit happy days spent on the fells and elsewhere ...' Includes a brief description of the walk, (delightful) photographs, and a route map for - so far - some 250 walks, concentrating on the Lake District, North Yorks and East Yorks, but with some walks elsewhere.
'Hi. I like walking in the UK and from 2001 onwards I have been busy trying to do as many National Trails, LDPs, Regional Routes and Local walks as possible. Occasionally a mountain climb, or cycle ride gets chucked into the mix and I will bung the details up on my site - the general tone involves mockney and some self deprication!'
'Designed to bring you shorter, more achievable walks than the ones you’ll see on a lot of websites. Ones you can enjoy with friends and family or with your partner and that will take a couple of hours or less. As well as routes and maps, we’ll put reports on and photos of the walks we’ve done and maybe they’ll inspire you to get out and about too. Get some exercise! Clear out the cobwebs! You’re bound to have a lovely time and who knows… maybe in no time you’ll love a casual ramble as much as we do ...'
'From East Yorkshire's Wolds and Derbyshire's Peak District to the North Yorkshire Moors and Pennines, you will find the valleys among the rolling hills, the limestone scars, the gritstone ridges universally known as "Dales". This vast area provides some of the best & most varied walking opportunities in the country. Dales Trails gives you some ideas how to explore Yorkshire and other parts of Northern England on foot, and find hidden delights off the beaten track.'
'We want to create a world where everyone feels connected to the environment so they can enjoy the benefits it gives and make choices that help protect it ... We offer opportunities for people to engage with the outdoors for their benefit ... We inspire people to be passionate about the environment.'
'This Website was started as a way of recording walks we had done. We later added a lot of stuff about efforts to reduce our carbon footprint ... The walks pages are frequently updated, with new walks added, but the energy pages less so ... We have hundreds of free self-guided walks ... for you to read, download or follow using the on-line OS maps.'
'Provides free simple to follow directions for various walking routes, including GPS downloads and gives basic advice on a variety of walking issues.'
'The objective of Hikeview is to provide information about trail-marked long distance walking routes and provide resources to help plan a walk on any of these routes.'
'Walking Advice & Information ... Where to Walk in Ireland ... Walking Events & Challenges ... Irish Walking Routes ... Recommended Publications.'
Kieron Gribbon
'We've devised 182 walks in Cornwall, ranging from 2 to 10 miles, totalling 865 miles. Each walk has a map of the route, detailed directions, photos and some information about the area. The walks are classified by length, steepness grade, type of scenery (coastal, moorland, riverside etc) and, of course, whether there's a pub.'
John Alden
'The English Lake District is the most beautiful terrain I know. In 1990 I was fortunate to be able to come to live here permanently and walk the Lakeland fells to my heart's content. This site is dedicated to all those who explore the area on foot.'
'This is not the first website to describe walks on the UK's long distance footpaths, and it is certainly not the best. However many of the other websites are written by people who are super-fit - and men. I'm neither ...'
'I write up for this site the walks I devise, lead & research and since I have been engaged in this since 1996 there are quite a number. Walks are listed by area ...'
'I’m here to help you get out of the city and onto the hills. I want to show how you can have memorable hiking adventures in the UK’s best walking locations, all by public transport from London, and in a weekend ...'
'This site has grown from the Walk Eryri website (that was established way back in 2004) and the author’s desire to create a home for all the excellent free walking routes created online by indy websites and other organisations. We intend to provide the UK’s largest single database of mapped and fully explained free routes, not just some route plot with a sentence, with a route plotter to follow ...'
Dave Roberts
'My website aims to share the many wonderful days I have spent exploring the moors and mountains of the "Backbone of England" and beyond ...'
'Rambling, mainly in Northern England.' Details of over 100 walks.
'Oliver's Cornwall has recently undergone major changes. Increasingly, my visitors are looking for walks. So I have created Oliver's Cornwall Walking Pages, with pages for the Coast Path, Coastal Round Walks, Inland Trails, Coast-to-Coast Trails and Country and Moorland Walking.'
'Founded in the mid 1990s when a group of friends decided to work towards making Oxford a better place for people on foot ... Conditions for enjoying streets and urban outdoor spaces in Oxford are blighted by crowding, obstacles, air pollution, and traffic issues. OxPA campaigns to improve these issues.'
'Per-Rambulations looks for ways that go beyond mere mileage. Walking is more than a way to go between two points as quickly as possible. It is important to "see" the countryside rather than just looking at it. If we were to have a "mission statement" the nearest we would admit to is the last verse of W H Davies' poem Leisure "A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare".'
'My hobby is walking and most weekends I go for a 12-15 mile walk, usually in the Chiltern Hills where I live. I then add a description of the walk to the latest walks page of this web site, complete with photographs and a map of the route (courtesy of Google Maps). I have also walked a number of long-distance paths ...'
'Walking is what it's all about. Well this site anyway. So delve on in and read the journeys I've taken on various long distance routes in the United Kingdom, by selecting a walk ...'
'This is a collection of journals written by Colin and Mark, two brothers from Brum, as they wander across various bits of the UK. Now, if you are looking for a formal walking guide with lots of helpful directions and great information on tourist attractions you may be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want to have a more personal view of the aches and pains (and of course the fun) of a long distance hike then choose a journal from Our Diaries and enjoy the read! '
'There are many walking sites covering the north of England. This one is all about the south ...'
Philip Whittaker
'A gallery of webpages showing the walks and other activities enjoyed by myself, Richard Ratcliffe, Burnley, Lancs. For anyone who is not familiar with the format of this site, the intended route for viewers is through the "Recent" ... It's mostly walk reports with photos and commentary.'
'A blog for sharing the best routes and trails for exploring Surrey on foot ... Surrey boasts some of the best natural beauty in the country, and the greatest proportion of woodland out of all the counties in England ... This blog tracks all of the walks I go on, whether they’re existing routes or made up myself, and gives you all the information you could need before setting off.'
Jason Wicks
'Welcome to my website. My name is Tim Bertuchi and one of my favourite pastimes is walking / hiking and most of the current content of the site can be found in the Walking section which has photos and descriptions of the walks I have done ...'
ALERT Latest Updates dated 2013.
'The last ten or so years have passed uncomfortably quickly, it seems like only yesterday that I walked my first trail in the summer of 2004; the North Downs Way. Since then, trailwalking has become something of an addiction, an addiction made stronger by the very limited times I get off work ...'
'The Yorkshire Dales provide one of the best walking areas in the country covering a wide variety of scenery and some isolated locations many of which can be accessed by public transport. Many of the walks make use of the excellent Settle-Carlisle train service and local transport links - no car needed! For this reason I would initially recommend a visit to the Ribblehead and Three Peaks area, Moorcock Inn, Dentdale and Little White Bus [Hawes] pages.'
John Carey
'Interactive directory of the world’s best walks and hikes ...
'We have now opened our walks section, and now have a selection of ... walks in the North Pennines, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, Yorkshire Wolds, the Shropshire Hills and Scotland.'
'A completely free directory of UK walks with step-by-step descriptive walking routes and maps. I hope you enjoy the walks as much as I have and find my reviews of walking clothes, walking boots and walking accessories valuable.'
David Knockton
Walks from the BBC One Wales walking series.
Derek Brockway [Wikipedia]
'A continuing record of my days out walking and cycling in the British Countryside (sometimes beyond!) and I hope will inspire others to discover that even with a limited amount of time to spare they can still complete our long distance trails.'
Paul Willis
'The UK's ancient pathways are a national treasure out there to be explored for their history, archaelogy and wild life. Now having a tad more time for this kind of pursuit, I have been investigating some of them recently - starting with the Icknield Way ... I have split the Way into circular routes each of which takes a bite-sized stretch that can be completed as a comfortable stroll in a leisurely few hours. The standard information available is great for taking you from A to B along the paths but these circular routes will allow you to plan a day's walk which will bring you back to A again by the end of the stroll.' Other Trails include: The Ridgeway; Greensand Ridge Walk; John Bunyan Trail; North Bedfordshire Heritage Trail; Three Shires Way.
