Type of Walk: Military History
The Category Military History is a subset of Heritage and History.
'On Saturday 21st of July 1403 a rebel army led by Sir Henry "Hotspur" Percy and the Royal army of Henry IV met. The Battle that followed was to be remembered by its ferocity ...' Note that I have replaced the original Link.
'Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Antonine Wall was the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. Built on the orders of the Emperor Antoninus Pius in the years following AD 140, it ran for 40 Roman miles (60 km) from modern Bo'ness on the Firth of Forth to Old Kilpatrick on the River Clyde. Over time, the industrial and commercial heartland of Scotland has grown around it yet, unbelievably, one-third of its total length is still visible today. Archaeological excavations have demonstrated that much of the rest survives well beneath both fields and urban areas.'

Stamford Bridge Battlefield Walks 'Please contact the Society if you wish to attend a Battlefield Walk or to arrange a group booking ... The Walks take place on a Sunday morning at 11 am unless requested differently. The Walks are dependant on the weather and conditions. A decision as to the type and duration is made at the start. Duration is usually 1-2 hours, but the longer walk can be up to 3 hours.'
'These were powerful places to stand and surmise, with sunlight slanting across the graves and blackbirds fluttering in the cemetery hedges. Walking back north up the hidden cleft of Sherbrook Valley, with the stream chuckling quietly under its bridges and slopes of birch and pine closing off the valley from the outside world, the mud, blood and slaughter that waited for the young trainees of Brocton Camps seemed utterly inconceivable.'

The Walk 'follows the Cam valley to Saffron Walden, crossing into the Pant river valley and then near Wimbish to the river Chelmer valley that it follows south via Thaxted and Great Dunmow to Chelmsford. Here the Chelmer turns east, joining the Blackwater (Panta in Roman times) to reach the head of the Blackwater estuary at Maldon, where the site of the battle is finally reached ... Links include West Anglian Way / Fen Rivers Way and Essex Way, Icknield Way Path and Centenary Circle (of Chelmsford)'.
Paths and trails on 'open access' land allowing a circular walk between the Memorial and the Windmills. Accessible by several bus services.
'Marking the spot of the last major battle on British soil, the wild moor at Culloden is the resting place of 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who fought and died here in 1746. Today, you can walk along the battle lines and see the graves of the soldiers beside the memorial cairn in the centre of the battlefield.'

'The Heritage Trail links historic and cultural points of interest in Devonport. It is a great way to explore the local area, once an important town in its own right. The Trail also offers a way-marked detour from the popular South West Coastal Footpath; starting at Admiral's Hard in Stonehouse to connect with the Plymouth Waterfront Walkway and the Cremyll Ferry - linking Devon and Cornwall.'
'Long distance footpath running 20 miles through beautiful countryside in the heart of England. The trail starts in Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire and ends in Kineton, Warwickshire.'
'Hilsea Lines is a popular attraction for both residents and visitors - a green corridor separating Portsea Island from the mainland. Eight interpretation boards across Hilsea Lines illustrate self-guided walks which help visitors appreciate the significance of the military and natural history that can be seen along the way. You can download ... two self-guided walks leaflets - one about the military history of the area and the other focusing on the wildlife.'

'Huntingdon played a significant role in the First World War. Many troops were stationed in Huntingdon, wounded soldiers were treated here and the Portholme Aerodrome Company contributed to the development of aviation. This map shows locations that would have been of importance during the war and places of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice'
'The Heritage Paths (Campsie Fells) Project is very pleased to announce that we have a lovely new Campsies map leaflet showing this historic route and other paths in the area ... if you'd like one of those send a SAE to us c/o ScotWays.'
'We don't have a full recent survey of this path, but it has been described as the best part of the Antonine Wall to walk on by a journalist and is relatively accessible.'
'Almost 28,000 Pillboxes were built in 1940/41 but now it is estimated only about 20% remain and many of these are in a poor condition. There may only be 1000 left in good condition. Their survival is threatened, even though interest in pillboxes is growing, and many more are likely to disappear. This website is a record of ones I have seen and how you can find them on walks throughout the country.'
'A British walk with two principal route options or the simpler challenge of walking the Hadrian's Wall Path over its entire length ... This walk offers a variety of interest and terrain. In addition to the Roman Connection there are many parts with extensive historical interest spanning the centuries with many signs of the Reiving history that dominated so many parts of this countryside. The walk includes City/urban sections, river sections, moor land, forestry and open hill top walks. This will be a route that will excite due to its variety, interest and beauty.'
ALERT At Review, the description of this Walk on the Walking Support Website formerly referenced was unfortunately no longer accessible.
'This a part of General Wade's Road from Dunkeld to Inverness built between 1728 and 1730 - 102 miles long in total. Further sections of this lengthy Military Road which are described on the Heritage Paths website are the stretch via Old Blair, that via the Slochd and the Old Edinburgh Road from Moy to Inverness.'
'The route links Windsor and Winchester, via the third castle, Odiham.'
'The walk book (The Three Castles Path by David Bounds for the East Berkshire Ramblers’ Association Group) is excellent with very clear maps and very precise directions, as well as helpful comments on points of interest along the way - the hallmark of the East Berkshire Ramblers series of walk book books.'
'This walk around the Welsh Marches takes in the three Norman castles of Skenfrith, Grosmont and Whitecastle. From Abergavenny, the best starting point is White Castle which is around eight miles from Abergavenny along the B4521 (Old Ross Road, signposted Skenfrith).'
'We aim to do two walks per month – but obviously need to have volunteers to lead them so keep visiting this page as when we can put more walks on this is where they will be shown.'
'Commemorate the effects of World War 1 on the homefront by partaking in our specially created World War 1 Shropshire Walk routes. Use the Map ... to see a leaflet for that particular route - each walk has been numbered.'
'Created in celebration of one of the Isle of Wight’s most prominent First World War stories; that of General Jack Seely and his horse Warrior - a real-life War Horse.'
